ESSENTIAL SKILLS FOR ABORIGINAL FUTURES


This program is available to any Aboriginal person
entitled to work in Canada.
Participants must have:
Flexibility for on-call and for shift work
Excellent physical condition
Grade 12 or equivalency
Safety consciousness
Valid drivers license
CN has a zero tolerance policy regarding
drugs/alcohol
What does the 6 week program involve?
Customized Essential Skills training targeted
to the needs of CN
On site tours
TOWES (Test of Workplace Essential
Skills) assessment
Interview preparation
Ongoing coaching.
What positions are targeted
through this partnership program?
Conductors
Conductors switch rail cars, make or split up
trains in yards, move cars between yards, sidings
or tracks (often using a remote control device
called a belt pack), according to the instructions
originating with yard and train planners. This
requires good communication skills involving
specific hand signals or radio to facilitate the safe
movement of engines and cars. They work oncall
with irregular hours, weekends and holidays.

What are “Essential Skills”?
Essential Skills serve as the foundation for learning
all other skills needed for work, learning and life.
Strong Essential Skills prepares people for evolving
in their jobs and adapting to workplace change.
There are 9 Essential Skills:
Reading Text
Document Use
Working with Numbers
Writing
Oral Communication
Working with Others
Thinking Skills
Computer Use
Continuous Learning
Will I be funded participating in the
essential skills program?
All participants will be eligible to apply for funding
through our affiliated employment assistance
offices (see list on back page)
How much will I be paid once I’m
hired?
Training rate is $800 weekly. The starting wage
upon successful completion of the training program
is on average $65,000 - $70,000 annually. Training
period - approximately 6- months (5 weeks classroom
training & approx. 4 months of field training)

The CN program starts June 16, 2008.
